Greek Rhapsody - Instrumental Music Rebetiko, plural rebetika (Greek: ρεμπέτικο, pronounced [reˈbetiko] and ρεμπέτικα pronounced [reˈbetikɑ] respectively), occasionally transliterated as rembetiko or rebetico, is a term used today to designate originally disparate kinds of urban Greek music which have come to be grouped together since the so-called rebetika revival, which started in the 1960s and developed further from the early 1970s onwards. (Roza Eskensazi, one of the stars of rebetika, was Jewish.) Instruments were initially Turkish and Arabic, such as the oud and kanoun, though these recordings featured mainly violin and sometimes cello, guitar, lyre and lauto. Singing style is Middle Eastern, as with ghazals. Do not expect high fidelity from these recordings from 1911 to 1937.
